A bold, textured scrunchie using classic granny stitch clusters, worked directly onto a hair tie.

A quick project full of charm, texture, and self-love.

This pattern was inspired by the beautiful granny stripe. There is just something about it, the classic simplicity of it.

This is just one scrunchie in a two-part granny stripe adventure for your hair. Scrunchies make us feel cute even when our hair is a knotted, messy bun.

So, I want these to focus on self-love and affirmation. Because even at our worst, we are beautiful.

Difficulty:
This pattern is great for confident beginners who feel comfortable with double crochet and want to explore clusters and treble stitches. It's a bite-sized, low-pressure project that lets you practice stitch consistency and color changes while creating something functional and beautiful.

If you're feeling unsure, I have a full YouTube tutorial where I walk through the entire process. Feel free to drop questions in the comments. I’m always happy to help.

Mindfulness Moment

Self-Love

When your yarn splits or you need to frog, pause. Breathe. Say a small self-affirmation.

A self-affirmation is something encouraging. A phrase that reflects something you're proud of or something you hope to believe about yourself. You don't have to believe it fully. But the more often you say it, the closer you'll get to truly feeling it.

The more personal, the better:

  • "I breathed through my anger today. That took strength."
  • "My hair looked beautiful today. I like it in my new handmade scrunchie."
  • "I have the best cool mom dances around."

If you're not sure where to start, here are a few gentle ones anyone can try:

  • I am proud of myself
  • I am beautiful
  • I am worthy of love and care
  • I find happiness in life
  • I am a positive person to be around

Try writing your own. It's a small but powerful way to practice self-love. You wouldn't stay around people who spoke to you unkindly. Don't let your inner voice become one of them. Train your mind to be someone you'd love to spend time with.

Round 4 (Color B)

Ch 3 (counts as tr), 1 tr in each of the dc.

6 tr in the next ch-1 sp. (1 tr in each of next 3 dc, 6 tr in next ch-1 sp) [126 tr]

Finish with an invisible join to first tr. FO and weave in ends.

Classic 10 trend variation

I used a smaller hair tie (1 ¼ in electric), size 2mm hook, and Red Heart Classic Yarn Classic 10 (color: off-white). See image below.

Classic 10 trend variation of ruffle scrunchie with dark blue background.

Optional Ideas

Add beads before each treble for sparkle.

Try metallic yarn (or metallic trend with the yarn) for Color B.

Adjust stitch counts for a looser or tighter ruffle.

Ruffle Variation

Want an even flouncier look? Skip the dc stitches in Round 4 and work 9 treble crochets directly into each ch-1 space instead. This creates a looser, softer ruffle with more drape.

I’d love to see your finished scrunchie!
